Support services are available for families raising children with disabilities such as autism, but they are not always sufficient or easy to obtain.

"They're suffering alone, or they're suffering with very little services," said Dr. Carol Schall, director of the Virginia Autism Resource Center.

The Burkes qualified for a Medicaid waiver that allowed them to tap into state and federal funds for their son, Ryan, while keeping him at home until he was 16. But they did not know of the waiver until a caseworker mentioned it when Ryan was 9 or 10 years old, said Mike Burke.
